Defender of the Motherland Day is a national holiday celebrated annually on May 7, commemorating the founding of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. The event is marked by military parades, fireworks and ceremonies all around the country. On May 7, 1992, the President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev signed a decree on the establishment of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In October 2012, President Nazarbayev signed into law an amendment, giving the holiday a status as a national holiday.

Who guards the State

Army of Kazakhstan is divided into three types of Armed forces- Land Forces, Air Defense Forces and Naval Forces. The Land Forces also include kinds of troops such as: Airmobile troops, Missile Troops and Artillery. In addition to the Armed Forces, military organization includes Republican Guards, Interior Troops and Border Guard Service. Land Forces are designed for combat operations on land. They are the first to meet the enemy on their borders and to attack.

Missile Troops and Artillery are designed for combat operations with the gun and missile systems use, as well as artillery reconnaissance and control.

Airmobile troops are designed for operational, rapid execution of sudden, urgent tasks. Air defense Forces conduct reconnaissance, protect cities from the enemies air raids, carry valuable cargo.

Interior Troops guard important public facilities, special cargo in transit and execute special tasks.

Border Guard Service defends and protects the state border of Kazakhstan.

Over than twenty years ago, on May 7, 1992, the first President of Kazakhstan signed a decree on the establishment of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Currently, a military reform is being conducted in the Army of Kazakhstan. Earlier, First President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Decree No. 1085 'On measures for the further improvement of the structure of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan'. The main purpose of the decree is reforming the Armed Forces by switching to a three-branch structure of the Army consisting of Land Forces, Air Defense Forces and Naval Forces. A new type of troops, Aero-mobile Forces have been created in order to increase the efficiency of the use of mobile forces.
